GBI investigates alleged criminal activity by former Miller County Sheriff Rathel

Colquitt, Georgia – The GBI Thomasville Field Office was originally requested to investigate criminal complaints against Miller County Sheriff Shane Rathel in September 2016 by Pataula District Attorney Craig Earnest.

During the investigation, it was learned that Rathel allegedly took county monies which he used for personal reasons.

The investigation revealed Rathel allegedly took funds from several sources associated with the Miller County Sheriff’s Office.

Sixteen felony warrants were issued for Rathel for Felony Theft by Taking and one count of Violation of his Oath of Office.

Rathel turned himself in to the Miller County Jail on April 19, 2017, on the outstanding warrants. Rathel cooperated with GBI agents during the criminal investigation.

The theft charges and violation of oath of office are all state charges which will be handled in Miller County Superior Court in the Pataula Judicial Circuit.
