Last Chance to Purchase a Tree

“Planting for the Future”

The “Planting for the Future” tree project is sponsored by the Miller County Retired Educators for the purpose of providing trees for the landscape of the Miller County Schools. The MCREA tree project has offered and encouraged the community citizens, businesses, organizations, graduating classes, school clubs, and school grade levels to participate by either giving a donation to the project or purchasing a tree in honor or in memory of a family member, someone special, or a group.

It was planned to begin planting these trees during Thanksgiving holidays, but the lack of rainfall delayed the project until the Christmas holidays. We will be putting in an irrigation system and planting all the trees that have been purchased in the next few weeks. At present, about 90 trees have been purchased. However, to line the driveways and provide shade trees for the playground and other areas on the school property, we are still in need of additional trees to be purchased.

Crape Myrtle trees in honor or memory of students, teachers, or businesses, along with those in honor of grade levels will line the high school and elementary school entrances. Some crape myrtle and shade trees will be added to the front landscape of the schools. Additional shade trees will be planted around the parking areas. Shade trees in honor of the different graduating classes have been purchased and will be planted along the last entrance of the school that goes from Phillipsburg around the school and exits on Old Albany Road. Legacy trees have also been purchased to plant in other places.

A dedication plaque will be inscribed and posted in front of each tree purchased in memory or honor of an individual, group, or business, and a dedication service is being planned for an April or May date. This date will be announced at a later time.

Please be a part of this community project by giving a donation or purchasing a tree to help beautify the landscape of our Miller County Schools. Brochures can be picked up at Colquitt Police Department, Chamber of Commerce, or order form cut out of the Miller County Liberal. They can be turned in at the Police Dept. or mailed in to the address on the form. Crape Myrtle trees are $100, Shade trees are $150, and Legacy trees are $250. We want to thank those who have already purchased trees to support this project and encourage those who have not purchased to support us by purchasing this week. We encourage those who graduated from Miller County to contact classmates and purchase a Class Tree. Don’t let your class be left out! If you have any questions, please call 229-220-1160.
