Some of the Miller County cancer survivors are getting ready for the survivors walk Friday night Some of the Miller County cancer survivors are getting ready for the survivors walk Friday night If you missed this year’s Colquitt Relay for Life, you missed an evening of emotions, fun, entertainment, and fund-raising. Most of all you missed seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

The event kicked off Friday evening, April 1, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. with the opening ceremonies as Ansley Smith, co-chairman of Relay for Life, welcomed everyone to the event. The Rev. Kent Barwick, pastor of Colquitt Freewill Baptist Church, gave the invocation. Dana Nunnery sang The National Anthem.

Sonja Whitaker gave a most encouraging and inspirational talk on her dealing with breast cancer when she was much younger. She is a survivor of cancer for almost 30 years.

All cancer survivors were called up to the track to take the first lap of the evening while Jeff Braswell sang.

The final count for Friday night brought the grand total collected to fight cancer to $33,131.74. Funds continue to come in and because of your generous donations, the American Cancer Society will be one step closer to finding a cure for this dreaded disease of cancer.

Volunteers, Melanie Smith and Tamara Spann, read the names that luminaries were given in memory or honor of as the luminaries were lit by family or friends.

Our relay teams were awesome this year; the rounded-off totals so far collected are Beta Sigma Phi-$3600; Colquitt Freewill Baptist Church-$3000; Colquitt United Methodist Church-$ 5600; Colquitt First Baptist Church-$ 2400; Miller County Hospital-$3400 and PeoplesSouth Bank- $6700.

Survivor’s Choice award went to Beta Sigma Phi. The Best Theme Award went to Colquitt First Baptist Church. The Best Overall Award went to Miller County Hospital.

A new group of volunteers took charge of the first Relay of Life in Colquitt in three years. They were Ansley Smith and Stephanie Phillips, co-chairmen; Tamara Spann and Joanna Jenkins, team recruitment; Susan Weaver and Emily Griffin, corporate sponsors; Joanna Richardson, publicity; Emily Griffin, luminaries; Alesha Fletcher, survivors; Stephanie Phillips, accounting; Ansley Smith, entertainment. They all did a great job.

The entertainment for the night was led by Jeff Braswell, Larry King and Analeigh Cook with Charles Thorne as emcee.

The Relay for Life volunteers thanks to all of you who made this year’s event such a success. We look forward to having the event again soon!
