Notice of Property Tax Increase
The City of Colquitt is required to distribute the following press release to the local newspaper, radio station, or television station at the same time as the ‘NOTICE OF PROPERTY TAX INCREASE’ is published in the newspaper. It is not required that the local media actually publish or announce the Press Release; only that the levying and recommending authority provide it to the media.
The City of Colquitt is proposing the adoption of a mileage rate of 10.71 mills for the 2010 year. This does represent an increase in mileage of approximately 22%. Although the municipality plans to increase property tax rates, it must be noted that this is the first increase in mileage in over five years. The city has initiated tremendous cost cutting measures over the past two years in excess of $300,000 but is faced with mandated fund balancing initiatives as directed by independent auditors. With increased debt loads (approximately $4.5 million) in its water and sewer operations, the city has restricted any operating transfers to its general fund for deficit reduction. In order to accomplish a balanced general fund, a tax increase of 2 mills is necessary. Anyone which might have individual questions, comments, or concerns are invited to any of the three public hearings which will be held on September 8th and 15th at City Hall.
