Bainbridge -On Thursday night at about 11:30 p.m., a road safety check point on Planter Street by Bainbridge Viper Team, Georgia State Patrol and Decatur County Sheriffs PACE team, resulted in an arrest for possession of cocaine with intent.
In one stop, Sharon Perkins, 39, of 128 Black Jack Road was arrested by GSP Walt Landrum for DUI Drugs, for the second DUI in two weeks for her.
The passenger, Terrance Baker, was acting nervous and requested to step out of the vehicle. When GSP Brian Palmer frisked him, he felt a container rolled up in Baker’s right pant leg and asked, “What is this?” Terrance Baker told the Trooper that it was a pill bottle with crack cocaine.
GSP Palmer and Viper member Demetric Stubbs retrieved the crack cocaine and arrested Terrance Baker, 25, of 1626 Bethel Road for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
In October of 2008, Terrance Baker was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession with intent within 1000 feet of a housing project and possession of drugrelated objects.
Blakely - There will be a SPLOST referendum on the Nov. 2 ballot for Early County voters to consider extending the collection of a special purpose local option sales tax over the next six years.
The existing SPLOST will have been in effect six years when it ends December 21, 2011.
“Since there are no elections scheduled next year, we’re holding the referendum somewhat early to avoid the cost of holding a special election next year,” county administrator Kathy Howard said.
The SPLOST is projected to raise an estimated $9 million for the funding of capital outlay projects which have been identified by the county and cities of Arlington, Damascus and Jakin.
Cairo - After hours of searching the murky Ochlockonee River, divers finally found the body of a man who slipped off a sand bar and drowned in southern Grady County.
Felton Leon Moore, 36, was socializing with family and friends near Dickey Ferry Landing Sunday when the accident happened.
Moore’s 21-year-old daughter told authorities that her father was standing on a sand bar in waist deep water when he slipped into the river.
A family friend told officers he jumped into the river when he saw Moore struggling to stay afloat. The friend and Moore went under water together, but the friend was able to push Moore out of the water. Unfortunately, Moore slipped back into the water, and the friend was unable to catch him, according to Grady County Sheriff Harry Young.
Thomasville Police Department, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas County Fire and Rescue, DNR and Thomas County EMS searched Sunday until poor weather conditions halted the efforts. The search resumed Monday morning with assistance from Decatur County.
Finally, at 4:30 p.m., divers found Moore’s body under a tree in about 10-15 feet of water about 90 feet from where witnesses say he went under.
