Warriors’ first game cut short

by Coach B

Here come the Warriors. Here come the Warriors. The Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors’ football team opened up its 2010 campaign against AAA powerhouse Tattnall Square Academy out of Macon Friday night. The Warriors were looking to build on their 10-3 record last year where they reached the AA Final Four. The Warriors traveled to Macon and took part in the first GISA football game of the year. SGA knew they would be in a battle when it came to playing Tattnall who has won 11 out of the last 16 GISA AAA state titles. From the opening kickoff, the Warriors let the Trojans from Macon know that they came to play. The Warriors took the opening kickoff and went on a 14 play drive that covered 48 yards before it stalled out after the Warriors reached the Tattnall 18 yard line. Tattnall took over on downs, and seven plays later they were able to push across the goal line for the first score of the night. There was no question the Warriors were going to have to play all out if they were going to give the Trojans a battle. This was no more evident than after the first change of possession when the Warriors subbed out one player from offense to defense and the Trojans changed out all 11 men. The Warriors had two more drives that reached into Trojan territory. After a Warrior punt with 4:16 to go in the first half, the game was delayed because of weather in the area. The game was delayed for an hour and 45 minutes before both teams decided that the conditions were not safe enough to finish the game. Since the game was unable to reach halftime, it is considered a no contest and does not count against either team’s record. The Warriors were led by Taylor Tabb who gained 45 yards on nine carries and Dillon Driver who added 27 yards on six carries. SGA will host long time rival Westwood in the “Flint River Rivalry” this Thursday night at 7:30 in Damascus.
