Blakely - The Early County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to offer the position of Early County school superintendent to Col. Thomas Dyer Challender of Troy, Mo.

Challender is currently a school superintendent in Troy. He retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel and is a former commandant of Kemper Military School and College in Boonville, Missouri.

The following four candidates were announced as finalists in the search.

Col. Thomas Dyer Challender of Troy, MO. Challender was a current superintendent in Troy. He has served as both assistant superintendent and a high school principal.

The other three candidates were Mrs. Bari Brasfield Geeslin of Lumpkin; Mr. Derrell L. Jeffcoat of Griffin, and Dr. Cecil Alan Miller of Eufaula, AL.

Cairo - Violent deaths of a husband and wife in the Pine Park community have left seven children without parents and law enforcement officers without complete answers.

Although witnesses have reportedly said the deaths were a murdersuicide, investigators with the GBI decline to confirm. “I will say, both bodies had gunshot wounds,” said Steve Turner, special agent in charge of the regional GBI office in Thomasville.

The tragedy unfolded last Wednesday night shortly after 9 p.m. Callers started contacting E-911, reporting shots fired, then that someone had been shot. Before the end of the night, nearly 50 people had called E-911, according to Steve Clark, chief investigator with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of 31-year-old Lucretrica Johnson Simpson and 29-year-old Markethe Odell Simpson lying on a walkway in front of the home.

The couple had a history of domestic violence where law enforcement officers were called to the scene to intervene. They were separated at the time of their deaths. Recently Mrs. Simpson and her children had moved in with her mother and stepfather.

The night of the shooting, Simpson came to his mother-in-law’s home and in front of her and his children, shot his wife. The shooting started inside the home and continued outside until both lay dead.
