44th Annual Tabb Reunion

Descendants of Samuel Langley and Troup Tabb came from several states to hold their annual reunion at the American Legion (Gerald Grow Post 165) on 148 West Street in Colquitt on July 10th and July 11th. A small group assembled as usual at the American Legion on Saturday night to decorate and discuss the happenings of the past year.

The Sunday gatheringbegan at approximately 11:00 a.m. with the business session beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Mike Tabb, Sr., president, presiding. Iva Tabb gave the secretary’s report and kept minutes in the absence of Angela H. Tabb, secretary, who could not attend due to illness. Treasurer Felix Tabb, Jr. gave the Treasurer’s Report and the Tabb Cemetery Report. Merle Tabb Merritt, with the assistance of Darlene Tabb provided the Historian Report.

Awards were presented to several family members present at the reunion. Mrs. Lester (Christine) Tabb won the Hattie Mae Tabb Memorial Award for being the oldest indirect descendant present. Her great granddaughter Emily Sutton Tabb won the award for being the youngest descendant present at six weeks of age. Sutton is the daughter of Brad and Rebecca Tabb of Mobile, Alabama.

The oldest direct descendant award went to Iva Mae Bailey. The relative who won the award for traveling the greatest distance was Patricia Colby (app. 800 miles) from Virginia Beach, Virginia)

Families with the most children present and most generations present are recognized at the reunion and Mrs. Lester Tabb also received this recognition for 2010 with three of her four children present and four generations of her family represented.

The family voted unanimously to recognize Jim Herndon for his work in restoring and replacing tombstones in the area. He has done several in the Tabb Cemetery and recently prepared a headstone for Thomas Hugo Tabb, the ancestor of all the Tabbs in this area. A special plaque and a resolution recognizing his work will be prepared and presented to Mr Hendon in the near future. The family agreed that he and his wife will be recognized as honorary members of the Tabb family.

The Earl Tabb Memorial Award for the relative attending the most reunions was shared by Iva Tabb of Colquitt, Joy Tabb of Jacksonville, Florida, and Merle Tabb Merrit of Colquitt. All three have attended all of the reunions held since 1966.

More than 60 attended the reunion with descendants of Samuel Langhorne Tabb numbering 34 and those of the Troup Tabb Clan numbering 17.

The first Tabb Reunion was held in July 1966 at the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church in Colquitt, Miller County Georgia. Myrtle Tabb Henry and Earl Tabb organized the reunion.

The Tabb Reunion is held on the 2nd Sunday of July each year. Our families are descendants of Thomas Hugo Tabb. His children were Samuel Langley, Troup, John Edward, William, Thomas M., Mary Ann, Elizabeth, and Julia Ann Tabb. All descendants are encouraged to attend.
