Two general primaries were held here Tuesday, July 20. Voters chose if they would vote in the Democratic Primary election or Republican Primary election.
Some voters had a problem with declaring their party affiliation; it is nothing new since the parties were formed. Some complained that was not explained. If it wasn't, you don't read the Liberal. Some said they didn't print the ballots. Again, if you don't read the Liberal, you didn't see the ballots. They were both printed on June 30.
In many cases the winners of the primary get their names on the General Election ballot on November 2.
The exceptions are when there are more than two running in a race, and one does not get over 50 percent of the votes.
Another case is when there are only two candidates, and one does not get over 50 percent. That happened in the Democratic Primary when Clyde Jinks and Jimmy Phillips tied.
As far as we can tell, this is the first tie in a county primary election.
In the other local contested race, former county commissioner Kreg Freeman defeated Barbie Womble 210 votes to Womble’s 64.
Clyde and Jimmy will run, along with the others who didn't receive over 50 percent in the run-off primary election on August 10.
A few of the questions that have been asked are answered-
•If you were registered to vote in the General Primary elections, you can vote in the August 10 Run-off Primaries.
•If you did not vote in the General Primary, you must choose which primary you will vote in.
•If you did vote in the last General Primary, you must vote in the same primary you choose - no switching.
•If you were not registered to vote in the General Primaries, you cannot vote in the Run-off Primaries.
There were 4146 registered voters with 1128 votes cast, or 27.21 percent of the registered voters casting a ballot. Of the 835 votes cast at the polls on election day, 523 voted as Democrats, and 312 voted as Republicans. See the total unofficial Miller County primary returns on Page 16, and a copy of the Run-Off Primary Ballots can be seen on Page 13 of this edition.
