Chloe’s story...one of faith and hope
Chloe Shiver
Chloe Reese Shiver, the seven-year-old daughter of Kevin Shiver and Amy Shiver of Columbus continues to fight neuroblastoma.
Chloe was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was only three years old. Neuroblastoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that develops from nerve tissue. It occurs in infants and children.
The first year she received all her treatments at Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta. During this time she went through eight rounds of chemo, surgery to remove the tumor, surgery to remove her gall bladder, two stem cell transplants and radiation.
In May 2007 after the second stem cell transplant, she had scans only to determine she still had some spots that were resistant to the chemo. Shortly she began going to Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Hospital in New York City for 3F8 antibody treatments. She completed one year of treatment, and in April of 2008, scans still showed the same spots.
Since then Chloe has had to endure several more rounds of chemo and lots more trips to New York City.
During the last year, Chloe has been traveling to Egleston’s Children’s Hospital in Atlanta for low dose chemotherapy and to New York for other tests and treatments. In fact, she and her dad left for New York City on Tuesday, July 20. While there she will undergo multiple scans as well as bone marrow aspirations.
Chloe’s most famous thing to do while in New York is to eat at the Blue Moon Cafe. She is a big eater, even though she is a mere 35 pounds.
Through it all, Chloe has completed first grade and absolutely loves school. She has been enjoying her summer visiting with her family in South Georgia and swimming as much as possible. She is a ball of energy and laughter.
After Chloe returns from New York, she will be seeing a gastro specialist to see if it can be determined why she does not absorb much of her food.
All in all, they are thankful to God that she is doing so well. Please continue to pray for Chloe and her family as God continues to lead them on this journey.
There will be a benefit sing for Chloe to help with continued travel expenses on Saturday, July 31, at 7:00 p.m. at South Mt. Zion Church of God located at 696 Mayhaw Road, Colquitt.
Featured singers will be The Parrish Family, The Rocky Ridge Quartet, Rosa Phillips, Jeremy Horne, and Clarke and Kevin Shiver.
Chloe is the granddaughter of Nina Shiver and the late Wallace Shiver.
