Bainbridge - A Brunswick woman died after being injured in a wreck in Bainbridge last Friday evening.
The wreck happened at about 6:10 p.m. at the forking intersection of Georgia 97 South and the Georgia 97 South Connector.
Dorothy Henderson, 81, of Brunswick was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge, where she later died.
Henderson was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 sedan driven by her husband, Junious Henderson, 80, of Brunswick.
According to Bainbridge Public Safety, Mr. Henderson was travelling north on Georgia 91 and attempted to make a left turn onto the Georgia 97 connector. Henderson turned into the path of a Chrysler Aspen SUV driven by Morgan Heard Johns, 26, of Bainbridge, who was traveling south on Georgia 97.
Mr. Henderson was taken by emergency medical helicopter to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Johns was treated and released at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge. Johns’ infant daughter, who was in a child safety seat in the rear of the SUV, was not injured.
Two other passengers in the sedan, 17-yearold Janet Henderson and 16-year-old Judeia Henderson, were riding in the rear of the sedan. They had visible, but non-serious, injuries and were taken to Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge for treatment.
Blakely - Our community remains in a state of shock, mourning, and bewilderment following news of a weekend tragedy which took the lives of three members of a local family.
Family, friends and investigators are at a loss as to what could have caused the tragedy.
Funeral services for Matt, Amy and Garrett Justice were held last Wednesday, July 21, at the First United Methodist Church in Blakely.
Camilla - Fred Rackley, a 74-year-old Pelham man, and his 18-yearold partner, Shannon Humphries, were arrested July 14 after investigators seized 164 marijuana plants being grown in Meigs and Mitchell County.
Investigators say the street value of the seized marijuana plants is close to $200,000. Drug agents say they are still pursuing other people believed to be involved.
According to Mitchell County Investigators, Thomas County Narcotics Vice Division agents and Thomas County Sheriff’s Office deputies learned marijuana was growing behind a Meigs residence. Officers went to the site July 13 and surveyed the marijuana plot all night from a nearby area. Between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on July 14, someone approached the pot crop.
Thomas County officers arrested the suspect, Shannon Humphries, 18, of Meigs, who fled on foot. After a two block chase, she was apprehended.
Rackley of a Pelham address was also arrested in a nearby parked car. Fertilizer, water, a machete, and ant poison in the vehicle was found by agents.
Cairo - An autopsy is being performed on a 36-year-old Cairo woman who died while exercising at the Cairo Police Department Thursday evening.
Trudy Bryant and a number of women were working out in the gym area with Duke Donaldson of the Cairo Police Department. According to Police Chief Keith Sandefur, Ms. Bryant collapsed and was rushed to Grady General Hospital where she was pronounced dead around 8 p.m. A cause of death was not immediately known.
Cuthbert - Last Friday afternoon July 16, around 3:00 p.m., Cuthbert Police responded to the location of Tote Road and Wall Street to find a worker and the mower he was operating in a ditch. Sadly, they found Deron Shorter, a City of Cuthbert employee with the mower on top of him, resulting in his death.
According to Wiggins, the zero radius mower must have gotten too close and crashed into the ditch and overturned onto Shorter. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Deron Shorter, 38, of Cuthbert was previously a 13-year Cuthbert firefighter before transferring to the public works department.
