Sharp curves demand low speed

Vehicle overturns on curve. Vehicle overturns on curve. A call came to E911 Wednesday, July 14, at approximately 3:00 p.m., that a vehicle had overturned with a driver and four passengers. Sheriff’s units, EMS service and Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the scene.

When the emergency units arrived, all the passengers were already out of the vehicle.

Several area residents had arrived at the scene of the accident to assist the occupants.

The accident occurred on Avenue Road near Old Airport Road and a short distance from the Babcock Road.

Elisha Annette Callan, 35, of 1432 Babcock Road was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer, north on Avenue Road. She stated she swerved to miss a deer, over corrected, spinning clockwise into the ditch where the vehicle overturned. Two tires were deinflated. She was also attempting to go around a sharp curve that had a posted speed limit of 35 m.p.h. Speed was estimated at 55 m.p.h.

One resident stated that the curve had been the scene of multiple accidents. “If you attempt to go around that curve at over 45 or 50 m.p.h.,, they usually wind up in the ditch or overturned. I can think of over seven wrecks on this curve,” one of the rescue workers stated.

According to the crash report, there was one vehicle involved, with five motorists. There were the driver, Jordan Callan, 15, George Callan, 11, Kasey Ferris, 15, and Colby Sauls, 16.

One of the passengers stated that they killed a small rattlesnake when they climbed out. The vehicle sustained moderate damage. It was registered to George Parks Callan III. The vehicle was removed by a wrecker.

The miracle was that there were no injuries.

Trooper B. Palmer of the Georgia State Patrol Post 14, Colquitt, was the investigating officer.
