Not just a man's best friend-
Karen Calhoun with her yellow Lab, Sassy
Man's best friend, the dog, can be a good friend to women and patients as well.
In a recent article, "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My..." by Jennifer McGhee Siler, editor of The Adelphean, the official magazine of Alpha Delta Pi, she told of how some of the sisters did great things with their pets. One of these volunteers and carers was Karen Calhoun, Epsilon Pi-Georgia Southern, now living in Tallahassee, FL.
With the help of her yellow Labrador, Sassy, Karen visits families at the Big Ben Hospice House and mentors students at an elementary school as part of the R.E.A.D. therapy team.
Karen and Sassy became certified with ComForT Therapy, a non-profit volunteer animal visitation program where owners and their pets visit long-term care facilities, rehab and assisted-living residences.
"We receive blessings each time. I hope that Sassy and I make a difference in the children's lives and that they all learn to love to read," said Karen.
Karen is the daughter of Joanne Holland of Colquitt and the late J.E. Calhoun.
