Up The Creek Without A Paddle

Stuff happens
by Terry Toole

He, the Devil, is still amongst us.

Last Saturday evening, a week ago, we were enjoying an evening out at Emerald Lake Resort watching entertainers sing like Conway Twitty, Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline. They were all good, and the outside show was perfect with the exception of a few gnats.

When we got home, as Betty Jo walked into the den, she screamed, "Oh, no, she’s dead."

Uva, my favorite mother-in-law, was lying on the floor with blood all over the carpet where she had fallen and cut her head in several places.

When I came around to see what had happened, Uva said, "Where have you all been? I thought you would never come home."

She had a hand full of blood. I looked, but really couldn't tell what damage she had.

"I've been lying here for two hours, and couldn't get up," she said.

Yes, she has an alert necklace that will ring my cell phone first, call the office, the police and finally 911. The necklace was three feet from her on the table next to her chair where she had left it. I got her up and checked to see if anything was broken except her head. We got her into the car and took her to the ER.

Long story, short, she had five cuts that took 15 staples to close. She still has a head full of staples, but is able to work at the office a few afternoons each week. They gave me the staple remover, but I think I might get some help to take them out. Uva thinks that might be a good idea, too.

Last week, I was sitting in the doctor's office in one of the holding areas waiting for my first wife to get checked for possible eye surgery.

This lady from the State of Baker was waiting to get into one of the holding areas for an exam and she said, "Since I got to be sixty, it seems like I stay in a doctor’s office.

I told her, "Lady, it don't get any better, so get used to it."

Betty Jo had some good news and bad news. That happens when doctors check a 74-year-old. After a thorough eye exam, the doctor told her she would have to take out her contacts for a month or two before he could see what she needed. Wearing hard contacts for over 50 years has been good to let her see, but bad on the eyeballs.

That's just minor stuff compared to what she was going though the first of the year. I’m just glad to have her here for them to keep patching.

Tammy finished up her chemo, and other than her fall out on the patio, she is expecting to be feeling better.

Betty Jo's sister, Meale, had to be put in the hospital in Atlanta with heart problems. They let her go to my baby girl,Donna's, to recuperate.

Dr. Ben, my plastic surgeon, released me after looking at the cuts and slices he patched. He didn’t make me look any better, but thought he did right well considering what he had to work with.

Other than that, we are all doing well for the shape that we are in.

We all get so much better than we deserve. There are so many who are in so much worse shape, it makes me ashamed to fuss and complain.

Changing the subject, we have an election coming up Tuesday, or more exact, a primary. This is the one where you have to choose voting for Democrats or Republicans. Like it or not, you must choose. I would advise that you study your choices. There are quite a few on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

I have some good friends running as Democrats and some running as Republicans. They made their choices. I will have no problem doing the same.

A number of voters have called to ask me about the sales tax, and what was it for. It has been advertised for several weeks. You need to read it. It will be for five years if passed.

Let me tell you how to vote, vote like me, like you want to. Please vote. This is your only way to change or leave the same.
