Search warrant nets arrests and gambling equipment seizure

On Friday, July 9, at 10:14 p.m., officers of the Colquitt Police Department served a search warrant at Country Boy’s Shell Station at 410 West Crawford Street.

In the investigation, the officers found six video poker machines in a room in the rear of the business away from the open area.

To have the video poker games in a business is not against the law if payment for winning does not have cash involved, and the prize or gift must not exceed $5.00 in value.

The investigation of this business has been going on of awhile. The evidence gathered ended in the issuing charges against the owner, Steven C. Roberts and employee, Jessie Lee Williams Jr. for commercial gambling and keeping a gambling place.

The six video poker machines and $1242.00 in cash were taken by the officers as evidence in the alleged operation.

If convicted of the violation of commercial gambling, the charge is a felony, and the convicted violators can be punished by imprisonment of up to one to fiveyears or by a fine not to exceed $10,000.00 or both.

For the charge of keeping a gambling place if convicted, a person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature.
