The Miller County 14 and under girls traveled to Fitzgerald to play in the District 3 All-Star Championships June 21 - 26.
Miller defeated Fitzgerald in the first round by a score of 7-1.
The second round the girls came out a little sluggish and found themselves on the short side of a 5-3 game against Cook County.
The loss really seemed to fire the girls up over the next few days as the girls rolled to victories over Wilcox County, 14-0, and Fitzgerald, 9-2.
On Friday the girls found a very strong Berrien County team standing between them and a rematch with Cook County in the championship round, but the girls came ready for battle and secured a hard fought 9-6 win over Berrien County. The win set up a rematch with Cook County. After a 15 minute rest our girls showed why they had lost only one game in the last two years as they pounded out 16 hits on their way to a 15-4 victory on Friday night. The win sent the tournament to a winner-take-all game for the championship on Saturday morning. Saturday morning the girls came out a little asleep but had enough moxy left in them to bring home the championship with a 6-1 win.
On Thursday, July 7, the girls traveled to Baxley,
GA for the Class C State Championship Tournament. It was extremely hot with temperatures reaching to 101 degrees, but so were the girl’s bats as they pounded Butts County in the first round, 15-2. The next day the girls had to face tournament favorite and eventual State Champions Dodge County at 12 p.m.; this game turned out to be a war as the game went to the seventh with our team down 1 to 0 before rallying to tie it with two outs. The game then went into extra innings as our girls lost a heart-breaker 4-3 in eight innings. The game proved devastating as the girls had to turn around in the 100 degree heat and play a tough and rested team from Telfair County 15 minutes later. With the combination of the heat and heartbreaking loss earlier, the girls just couldn’t seem to gather enough fight and lost to Telfair.
Please congratulate these girls when you see them around town on a great season; the girls have been playing together since
March and had a record of 22-3 for the year. Layout1 6/28/10 1:01PM Page1
