Mayhaw Singers entertain a large crowd that attended the Independence Day celebration. Mayhaw Singers entertain a large crowd that attended the Independence Day celebration. The Fourth of July celebration held on Friday evening, July 2, was enjoyed by almost everyone that attended.

The gala event was held at Spring Creek Recreation Park and was about as near perfect weather for the event than we have had in years.

There was plenty of BBQ sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone to enjoy and all the children had a large time on the inflatables.

The celebration of our nation’s 234th birthday was enjoyed by hundreds of people from right here in Colquitt and many from out of town visiting for the holiday weekend.

The festivities officially started at 7:30 p.m., with Mayor Jerry Chapman opening the celebration with a welcome and announcing the events scheduled for the evening’s enjoyment.

American Legion commander, Jim East, introduced members of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to present the Colors of all the flags of each of the branches of service and the POW flag. As each of the armed services songs was played, members in the audience who had served were asked to stand.

Commander Gerald Jenkins of the VFW then led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, followed by Holly Thomas singing the National Anthem. Chaplain Glen Sheffield gave the invocation.

After the patriotic portion of the evening’s festivities, the entertainment got underway with some of Colquitt’s best “May-haw” singers. Jessica McLendon, Debra Atkinson, Larry King, Terry Pickle and Holly and Cory Thomas entertained the crowd with several “hits” from the “MayHaw” show.

Closing the entertainment portion of the festivities, The Mayhaw Quartet, featuring Cory and Holly Thomas, Larry King and Terry Pickle entertained the crowd once again.

About 9:30 p.m. the fireworks started and ended before the crowd was ready for them to be over. The fireworks were so beautiful that several in the park stated that they just didn’t last long enough.

It was a good evening to enjoy great entertainment, honor our country and our veterans, and have a good time with family and friends.

We should always thank the sponsors who make this possible each year.
