Colquitt man charged in beating at local Subway

Dexter Deon Gilbert Dexter Deon Gilbert A Colquitt man remains in the Miller County Jail after being charged with battery, terroristic threat, and public drunkenness.

The report states that Officer Charles Griffin was contacted on his cell phone by Officer Scott Cleveland who advised that Dexter Deon Gilbert, age 32, of a Colquitt address was at the Subway on Crawford Street beating his ex-girlfriend, La’Keysha Griffin.

Upon receiving the information, Officer Griffin responded to the scene along with Captain Dan Stone. When the officers arrived, they observed a large crowd of people inside the Subway Restaurant. Once inside the restaurant, the victim was located. The victim, identified as Griffin, is an employee of Subway and was at work when Gilbert, who is her exboyfriend and the father of her child, entered the Subway through the front entrance.

According to the report, Gilbert went behind the counter where Griffin was working and began arguing with her and then begin to hit and shove her. He struck the victim several times in the face with the fight ending up in the storage room of Subway. Gilbert hit the victim in the face with his closed fist, cutting her right upper lip and struck her again on the right temple above and behind her right eye, causing a large lump to form. He continued to hit her until she fell to the floor. At this point, Gilbert fled out the back door of the building.

The officers were given a description of the subject and a search for him was initiated. Gilbert was located behind the ag center, next door to Subway. When Captain Stone was handcuffing Gilbert, who was cursing and threatening the officer, the subject had a strong odor of alcohol about his person. Despite several orders given by several law enforcement personnel, the subject continued to curse while he was being secured for his handcuffs. At this point, Gilbert began a verbal assault directed to Captain Stone. Gilbert refused to follow Captain Stone’s verbal orders and had to be restrained by officers. After several more verbal comments from the victim, Gilbert was physically placed in the patrol car.

He was taken to the Miller County Jail where he was booked on warrants for family violence battery, public drunk, and terroristic threats against a police officer.

The victim was taken to the Miller County Hospital where she was treated for her wounds.
