14 & Under Boys District Champs

The tournament began on Monday, June 21, however, Miller’s opponent withdrew before the games got underway and Miller was given a bye.

Miller County faced undefeated Wilcox County on Monday. The first inning saw no one rounding the bases. At the top of the second, Tyler Johnson and Garrett Vann led off with a single and double respectively. Early Whitaker, Hunter Phillips, and Jackson Fleet followed up with hits scoring Miller four runs. Then Michael Cowart did his job on the mound for Miller.

Tyler and Garrett blasted the ball again in the third scoring two more runs for Miller. Michael shut down Wilcox’s bats again. Andrew Whitaker was an asset to the defense.

In the fourth inning, Wilcox’s pitching gave Miller four runs for a total of 10. Michael sat the Wilcox batters down. He had seven strike outs for the game.

Miller’s bats were quite during the fifth. Tyler Johnson came in and pitched the fifth and final inning for Miller.

Miller defeated Wilcox with the score of 10-0.

Undefeated Miller faced undefeated Irwin County in the next game of the tournament. The winner of this game would be guaranteed at least second place. The pitching battle began with the first pitch. Michael Cowart pitched for Miller. Irwin got one run in the third. Miller battled back and scored two runs at the top of the fourth. The pitching battle continued through the end of the game. Miller defeated Irwin by a score of 2-1. Michael had 13 strike outs.

The championship game was played on Saturday morning between Wilcox and Miller. This time Tyler Johnson took the mound for Miller. Wilcox struck quickly and scored two runs. Miller struck back beginning with Jake Warren’s hit to right field. Cole Vann walked and then Garrett Vann smashed the ball to deep center field allowing two runs to score.

Wilcox was shut down in the second. Miller batted around and scored seven runs for a total of nine.

The third inning saw three-up-three-down for both teams.

In the fourth inning Wilcox scored one run and was then stopped by three catches in center field by Austin Henley.

Miller teed-off on the pitchers for Wilcox batting through the line-up. The game was called after Landon Holmes knocked in the 6th run of the inning causing the game to be called due to the run rule. Miller defeated Wilcox 15-3.

After the game the team was presented championship trophies. The boys will compete in the state tournament in Baxley July 7-10.
