Richard Luther "Dick" Spancake

Mr. Richard “Dick” Spancake, age 88, of Americus, formerly of Colquitt, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Americus.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 26, at Sheffield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Matt Stewart and Rev. Keith Cox officiating.

Interment followed in the Colquitt City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Travis Rentz, Justin Spancake, Blake Shepard, Danny Shepard, Billy Kimbrel, and David Cox.

Mr. Dick was born July 14, 1921, in Pine Grove, PA, where he was a 1939 graduate of Pine Grove High School. He later enlisted in the Army/Air Force on July 27, 1942, and served in the 1252nd Army Air Force Base Unit as an aircraft mechanic. He received the American Theater Ribbon, EAMET Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the No Time Lost under AW 107 Lapel Button. He received an honorable discharge on February 10, 1946. He was a life member of the Elks Club in Dothan, a life member of the Legion of the Moose Club, the Walter C. Dancer Lodge #115, and the Albany Hasan Temple. Mr. Dick received his 50 year pin from the Walter C. Dancer Lodge #155 and the Albany Hasan temple. He was the former owner/operator of Drake Spancake Motors in Colquitt and later retired from Mitchell Manuals, Inc. where he sold automotive manuals to automobile dealers and mechanics. Mr. Dick was a member of Colquitt United Methodist Church but had attended Lee Street United Methodist Church in Americus until his health kept him from attending.

He is survived by one daughter Jan (Ronnie) Rentz, Colquitt; one son, Richard Spancake, Jr., Nashville; four grandchildren, Travis (Carrie) Rentz, Rev. Keith (April) Cox, Richard Justin Spancake, Sara Rebecca Spancake; four great-grandchildren, Charles Henderson Rentz, Meagan Rachel Cox, Jordan Keith Cox, and Jackson Cole Sayer; one sister, Janet Rehrer of Pine Grove PA, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Drake Spancake, and one daughter, Anne Spancake Cox.

Colquitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
