Camilla - A seatbelt violation and the discovery of a large quantity of drugs was just one of three incidents that resulted in several criminal charges against Mitchell County individuals.

Cairo - When firefighters were dispatched to battle a house fire in northwest Cairo during the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, May 22, it turned out firemen had more than a blaze to extinguish--they also had to contend with low water pressure.
The water system the morning of the fire would not sustain the required fire flow due to the low pressure in the system.
The fire chief says he and his staff had been advised by utilities’ officials previously that in the event of a fire, the utilities department would have to manually switch on the high service pumps at the water plant, which is where the city’s only water wells are located.
According to Fire Chief Towne, the utilities’ department was notified immediately, but it was taking too long for the pressure to build in the system, so the county fire department had to be called in.
The home was totally destroyed in the fire, and it took 35 firemen from both the city and county to bring the fire under control.

Havana - The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of the Quincy Police Department, served four warrants and confiscated items from four Gadsden County businesses Monday afternoon.
According to authorities, the warrants were for selling “knock off” clothing and shoes, which is a violation of copyright names, and items used as drug paraphernalia such as the glass and metal rose containers which can be made into illegal drug pipes. Also confiscated were coin-operated vending machines: the type you drop a coin into and a blade sweeps across the money, occasionally pushing coins off.
