Bainbridge -On April 29, an Old Pelham Road resident reported that a neighbor’s dogs were out and acting aggressively toward her and her grandchildren. Sheriff’s Animal Control Officer Chris Sapp arrived to investigate and found one dog acting aggressively, twice charging at the deputy.
Deputy Sapp determined that the dogs belonged to Markise Jones and were only kenneled at 102 Slough Loop Road while he lived on Planter Street. Mr. Jones arrived at the scene and was told the dogs would be impounded for five days due to the running at large and the dogs’ aggressive nature.
Deputy Sapp also told Mr. Jones that he intended to classify the dogs as dangerous/ vicious as they were unattended and running free in a residential neighborhood and acting viciously toward residents. There had also been three other complaints to 911 recently regarding Mr. Jones’ dogs.
Mr. Jones requested a hearing regarding the classification before the Decatur County Commissioners, which was held on May 25. The animal control officer’s dangerous/vicious dog determination was upheld unanimously.
The Decatur County Animal Control Ordinance required provisions for a dangerous/vicious dog is a proper enclosure, spayed or neutered within 15 days, a $150 registration fee and a $75,000 insurance policy or surety bond for the dog.
After the hearing, Mr. Jones stated that he could not afford to comply with the determination and gave permission to euthanize the dog effective immediately.
In Magistrate Court, Mr. Jones’ third offense under the County Animal Control Ordinance cost him $1,302, and Markise Jones was sentenced to 90 days - suspended. He was, however, taken into custody pending payment of the fine.

Two other men, Zantavious Bryant, 18, and Arther Thomas Jr. 19, were already in custody after a burglary of a convenience store west of Quincy on US 90 on May 21.
Lane was captured just off the CSX railroad tracks near Atlanta Street in Quincy after he ran from officers. A perimeter was established around the area by police officers and sheriff’s deputies blocking Lane’s escape. He was caught about 30 minutes after he ran from authorities.
According to an arrest report from the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Department, the three men entered the store after one of them threw a brick through the front glass door.
It was determined from viewing the store’s surveillance tapes that Bryant was one of the suspects.
Thomas was later arrested after he was identified as one of the suspects.
