Memorial Day observed here
Mickey & Sherry Henley place wreath on memorial stone.
It was a special day, Monday, May 31, as members of American Legion Post #165 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6046 gathered at the northeast corner of the square in observance of Memorial Day.
Although many of the merchants and government offices were closed, a good number of interested citizens were on hand to remember those who had served in our Armed Forces and to honor the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and protection against our enemies. The program was opened by a welcome from V.F.W. Commander Gerald Jenkins. Chaplain Glenn Sheffield gave the invocation.
American Legion Commander Jim East told of the empty chair for the POW/ MIA ceremony as Senior Vice Commander Mickey Henley draped the empty chair.
Holly Thomas sang the National Anthem. VFW Senior Vice Commander Larry Cook led in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Sgt. Maj. Johnny L. Snodgras s (Ret . ) was feature speaker.
Ben Johnson then recognized the branches of the U.S. military as members stood as their service song was played.
Next Walter Snodgrass introduced the feature speaker, his brother, Sgt. Maj. Johnny L. Snodgrass (Ret.).
The speaker told of how his brother, Walter, was the reason for him joining the military and remaining there for over 45 years. He told that his family members had served over 98 years in the military and then gave some interesting facts about Memorial Day.
Bob Razzo read a Memorial Day poem.
Mickey and Sherry Henley then placed the memorial wreath on the Veterans’ Monument.
MCHS band student, Brianna Smith played Taps, and Luther Bass ended the program with the benediction.
