War Memorial cross stolen from California's Mojave Desert

by Terry Toole

The war memorial cross has been stolen from its place in the Mojave Desert.

The memorial cross has been on the same spot since it was erected in 1934 by a veteran group. It has been there for over 76 years as a tribute to fallen veterans of World War I.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that the 8-foot-high cross could remain on the public land and did not violate the separation of church and state. The high court's decision overturned a lower court ruling that said the cross must be removed.

Multiple newspapers and TV stations have reported that the cross was removed Sunday night, May 9, according to Liberty Institute, a group that represented veterans’ groups and caretakers of the cross in the recent Supreme Court Case.

"This is an outrage, akin to desecrating people's graves," said institute president Kelly Shackelford, the reports stated. "It's a disgraceful attack on the selfless sacrifice of our veterans. We will not rest until this memorial is re-installed."

Another veteran stated, "Anyone who would destroy a memorial to our fallen heroes of this nation would kill your babies. There has to be a special place for someone like this."
