27th National Mayhaw Festival was fun
Scouts serve as Grand Marshals If you missed any or all of the 27th National Mayhaw Festival last Friday and Saturday, you missed one fun time and one great festival!
Even though the morning started off with a chill in the air, by mid-day the sun was shining brightly, and the temperature was nearly perfect for the day’s festivities.
The weekend celebration began Friday morning with the bake sale. Some of the best homemade goodies were on sale, and they all looked scrumptious. Burnell Grant and his crew were cooking his usual mouth-watering barbecue throughout the day and into the night.
At 6:00 p.m., the entertainment kicked off on the north side of the square with The Mayhaw Singers performing. Other entertainment included Jerry Murkerson and Karen Searcy. Then at 8:30 p.m., the street dance got underway. Fun, food and fellowship were enjoyed by the crowd until 10:00 p.m.
2010 National Mayhaw Queens and float always a hit Early Saturday morning, the foot race as well as the fun run and one mile run began at Colquitt Free Will Baptist Church. “It is perfect weather for the run,” quoted one of the participants in the 5K run.
At 10:00 a.m. the parade made its way up Main Street. Serving as the grand marshals for the parade were the Boys Scouts of America celebrating 100 years. There were also clowns, bands, beautiful girls, horses, trains, tractors, old cars, motorcycles, floats, politicians, queens, law officers, firemen, scooters, four-wheelers, fire trucks and much, much more on hand for the parade.
After the great parade, thousands walked or rode to beautiful Spring Creek Park where arts and crafts and food vendors were waiting to serve them.
The entertainment in the park amphitheater by the Leigh Mullis Band was as good or better than any concert that you’ll pay big money for. There was music for everyone, and the performers were professional plus.
Along with Mullis, the Miller County Elementary School Chorus under the direction of Holly Thomas did an excellent job in entertaining the crowd.
Also on the schedule was Lucretia’s School of Dance.
An event of this mag- nitude is not all done overnight. Hundreds of volunteers, which Colquitt is known for, and the sponsors who put up the funds make this national festival so successful.
Don’t take the sponsors and volunteers of an event like this for granted. None of them have to do it.
They all do it because they love this community and love to see people enjoy themselves here.
If you see a volunteer or one of the sponsors, stop and thank them for the National Mayhaw Festival, one of the best events in this area.
