DAVID HUNTER

"I'm pleased with my life, and I'm pleased with my family." So said Benjamin David Hunter in February of 2010, and later on that same day he suffered a stroke that eventually led to his death in the early-morning hours of Friday, March 19, 2010, in the Miller County Hospital.

At the time of his death, Mr. Hunter was the oldest man in Miller County and one of the four remaining "true sons" of Confederate veterans in Georgia and the 32 remaining in the nation.

Mr. Hunter was born in Colquitt on November 25, 1912, the last of three children born to Dr. William Elijah and Avadelle Wolf Hunter. From time to time David worked with his half-brother Edwin, who owned several theaters in Colquitt.

David served as projectionist at the Colquitt Theater during the thirties, forties and fifties. After being honorably discharged from military service, David studied electronics at the North Georgia Trade School in Clarkesville.

He moved his family into his mother's boardinghouse in 1947; from there they moved into a house on Bremond Street in 1951 and another on Grace Street in 1976.

David became a substitute mail carrier for the post office in Colquitt in 1948 and a regular in 1950; he continued to serve in the latter capacity until he retired in 1976.

As a teenager David joined the Colquitt Methodist Church, and he joined its choir in 1938. He took pride in the fact that he was active in that choir for over 65 years and a member of that church for over 80 years.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 22, at 3:00 p.m. at Colquitt United Methodist Church with Rev. James Aycock and Rev. David Thompson officiating.

Interment followed at the Colquitt City Cemetery.

The Sons of The Confederacy, Lt. Lovett Allen Tully SCV Camp 2071served as active pallbearers.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Hunter, Colquitt; three sons, Glen (Lynn) Hunter, Donalsonville, Don (Margie) Hunter, Meridian, MS, and Alan Hunter, Pensacola, FL.; two grandchildren, Todd Hunter, Champain-Urbana, Illinois, and Lauren Hunter of Valdosta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Elijah and Avadell Hunter, and one son, Steve Hunter.

Colquitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
