The event organizer, Herman Porter stated, “I wanted the best of the best; it did not matter if it was from a public school or private school.” Porter is a well known AAU coach from Columbus.

The teams were chosen based on nominations from coaches and the Albany Herald’s sports staff. The coaches for all four teams were selected last week. For the North teams, Coach Telly Turner from Albany was chosen for the girls’ team and Coach Marquis Davis from Monroe was selected for the boys.

This sports writer does not like to brag, but the coaches and sports staff that did the choosing selected three young athletes who are very well known here in Colquitt. They are Sukena Diamond, Katrina Crankfield, and Will Martin, three of the finest high school athletes around.

It is always exciting to have one of our own be selected to participate in higher events, whether it is in sports, chorus or academically. We may be a small school, but we have Pirate Pride running through our veins all the way from our precious pre-k to our bodacious seniors.

Prior to girls’ game time at 7 p.m., there will be a 3-point and dunk contest. The boys’ game will follow at 8:30 p.m. The price for admission is $10.

Also along with Diamond, Crankfield and Martin, another senior athlete, Cosby Salter, was chosen to participate in the Middle Georgia game which was held on March 21 at Stewart County High in Lumpkin.

Salters also was selected to participate in the Georgia vs. Alabama High School All-Star football game which was held at Columbus State University in which he did very well. Salters had two interceptions and 13 tackles, and one of the interceptions was run back for a touchdown.

So as everyone can read in this article, Miller County does have some fine athletes, and we are very proud of them and all their accomplishments.

Congratulations go to Sukena, Katrina, Will, and Cosby, we are so proud of you! Go, Pirates
