Five charged with possession of pot
All you ever wanted to know about pot
Talking about a messed up holiday weekend, it seems the subjects on the way to the Sunshine State might have started their celebrating a little early.
On Saturday, March 13, Sgt. Brad Cox of the Miller County Sheriff's Department, conducted a traffic stop on a maroon Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was traveling southbound on Hwy. 91 south.
The traffic stop was the result of an incoming call, reporting that the vehicle’s driver was driving recklessly.
The complainant had advised the 911 dispatcher that the vehicle almost ran into her in Colquitt. The caller stated that the vehicle was traveling out of town at a high rate of speed. The caller was still behind the vehicle as she was talking to the dispatcher and was able to report the vehicle's tag number.
Sgt. Cox caught up with the vehicle and followed it a short distance. After observing that the vehicle was still traveling at a high rate of speed, Sgt. Cox pulled the vehicle over.
Once the officer made contact with the driver, Michael Anthony Redmon, he asked to see his driver's license and registration.
As Sgt. Cox explained to Redmon why he had been stopped, Redmon stated that he and his four passengers were following some other people to Destin, FL.
As Sgt, Cox spoke with Mr. Redmon, he detected the strong odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.
Sgt. Cox then asked Mr. Redmon if he had been drinking.
Mr. Redmon stated that he hadn't.
The driver was asked by the officer if any drugs or other illegal items were inside the vehicle.
Mr. Redmon stated that there was not.
Sgt. Cox asked Mr. Redmon for consent to search the vehicle, as Deputy B. J. Josey arrived at the scene.
Mr. Redmon gave consent at which time Sgt. Cox asked everyone to step out of the vehicle.
The four passengers identified as Ryan Scott Davis, Kirk Chambers, Amanda Rena Willis, and Coral Kathleen Christian, all exited the vehicle. At that time Deputy Josey observed Ms. Christian grabbing at the front of her shorts, as if she was concealing something. Deputy Josey advised Ms. Christian to stop what she was doing. Ms. Christian turned as if she was going to walk away from the officer, at which time he told her to stop.
Sgt. Cox and Deputy Josey then asked Christian what was she concealing.
Ms. Christian pulled a small glass jar out of her shorts at that time, and handed it to deputy josey. The jar contained a green-leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. Sgt. Cox told Deputy Josey to place Ms. Christian into the back seat of his patrol car.
As Deputy Josey walked behind Ms. Christian to the patrol car, he observed her drop a white cloth draw-string bag from her shorts, and onto the ground. Inside the bag the officers discovered more marijuana and paraphenalia.
A search of the interior of the vehicle by Sgt. Cox revealed more marijuana, and smoking devices, as well as open containers of alcohol.
At that time Ms. Willis laid down in the ditch.
When asked by the two officers what the problem was, they were told that Ms. Willis was having an anxiety attack.
EMS was called to the scene to check Ms. Willis as Sgt. Cox performed field sobriety tests on Redmon.
Redmon passed all tests and was found to be sober.
The paramedics finished checking Ms. Willis and advised the two officers that they saw no need for her to be transported to the ER.
Ms. Willis, Mr. Redmon, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Chambers were all taken into custody at that time.
On the way to jail, Ms. Christian began bouncing around in the back of Sgt. Cox's patrol car saying that she was also having an anxiety attack and advising that she was going to pass out.
Sgt. Cox radioed for EMS to stand by beside the road to check Christian, before continuing on. Sgt. Cox made contact with EMS, who checked Ms. Christian and determined that she did not need to go to the ER either.
Upon arrival at the jail, all parties were separated until Sgt. Cox could interview them all.
Upon completion of the investigation all parties were charged as follows: Michael Anthony Redmon: open container
Amanda Rena Willis: possesion of marijuana, less than an ounce, open container; Ryan Scott Davis: furnishing alcohol to persons under 21, open container;
Kirk Chambers: possession of alcohol by person under 21, open container; Coral Kathleen Christian, possession of marijuana, less than an ounce, possession of alcohol by person under 21; open container.
All were released on bail bond.
