Beta Club staying busy

From bake sales to Toys for Tots, the Beta Club members and sponsors have been very busy over the past couple of months. The Beta Club started off December touching everyone’s sweet tooth with a bake sale for the Chamber of Commerce. Even though the location had to be changed to the Miller County High School gym due to weather conditions, the Beta Club still managed to raise $130 for the Chamber. The club is not done helping out the Chamber yet because we will be holding a follow-up bake sale at Wilkin’s IGA on Saturday, March 27.

December 17 was a very busy day for the members and sponsors. We all got together right after school, so the members could turn in their toys for the Toys for Tots program that the club partakes in annually. Overall, the members managed to raise over 100 toys for kids just in time for Christmas.

Later that same day, the Beta Club proudly inducted 17 new members into the Miller County Beta Club Organization at the annual Beta Club induction ceremony. Any friends or family members of the inductees were allowed to attend this event and watch as their honored ones joined many others in the National Beta Club Organization. After all parts were said and all new members were inducted, everyone sat down and enjoyed a nice evening of conversation and refreshments.

The Organization had a slower, more relaxing month in January with just our monthly meeting on Thursday, the 21st. All associates of the Beta Club got together and discussed how successful all the previous fund-raisers and club activities were over the past couple of months, and we also talked about our hopes for the future fundraisers. Then after all business was attended to, everyone sat down and enjoyed some chips, cookies, and drinks.

Moving on to February, there was a brief officers’ meeting after school on the 16th where Shamrocks were organized to be sold by all the members and were handed out to officers. The Shamrock sale raises money for people that are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. The way the Shamrock fund-raiser works is that students will either buy a green shamrock for one dollar or a gold one for five dollars. Then, after the purchase, the students will write their name on the clover and stick it to the outside of their favorite teacher’s door; at the end of the sale, one teacher will be rewarded favorite teacher and enjoy a nice dinner bought by the MDA.

Our last fund-raiser for February was all about the little cats and dogs. On February 27, you could find Beta members in front of every dollar store in Colquitt raising money and food for all the struggling pets. We thank the ones who donated to this cause. Every little bit helps.

Also just a last piece of information, our monthly meeting for February was changed from February 19 to February 25 and took place in the Miller County lunchroom after school. We discussed all upcoming business and enjoyed some light snacks as usual.

The shamrock sale and the follow-up Chamber of Commerce bake sale are our two fund-raisers to look forward to in March. The Shamrock sale will be continued through the month of March. Beta members and sponsors will be out in front of Wilkin’s IGA on Saturday, March 27, hosting a follow-up bake sale for the Chamber of Commerce, so we ask everyone to please come out and let the Beta Club satisfy your sweet cravings.

As well as at those to fund-raisers, you will also see some Beta Members behind the concession counter and selling popcorn and drinks at the Swamp Gravy shows. Beta members and sponsors have been volunteering at the Swamp Gravy shows for many years and enjoy helping out their hometown tourist attraction any chance they get. Hunter A. Cleveland
