Hog meat tonight
(L-R) Cody Roberts, Brandon Chambless, Wayne Chambless, Tommy Maine (not shown) took this 450 pound wild boar.
You never know what might come by the Liberal
office.
Deer season is out, so it's left up to the hog hunters to catch the game for the next few months except for those poor souls who hit one of the big deer on the highway. That happens almost once a week according to the wreck reports.
There is one wild animal that you never hear of being struck by a car or truck. That is a wild boar. They are usually on the side of some farmer’s field rooting or eating row crops.
The farmer is always happy to have these wild animals removed by those who love to hunt wild boar.
Last Saturday morning, February 6, Wayne and Brandon Chambless, Cody Roberts and Tommy Maine were up near Fort Gaines hunting wild hogs with the dogs. They have been up in that particular location before and knew there was a very large wild boar. Their dogs knew about this boar since he had done some damage to the dogs, and they didn't bay the large boar.
This time it was different. The dogs kept the 450 pound wild boar in bay long enough for the hunters to come and kill the hog armed only with a large knife and ropes.
For years, the hog hunters have invited me to come along. I very kindly decline. If I wasn't too old and still enjoyed the hunt, I just might try it.
When hunting wild hogs with dogs in Georgia, no firearms or bows are allowed. Knives and rope only are allowed. Once the track dogs, normally curs, locate and bay a hog, the catch dogs will go in and hold the hog until the hunters arrive. At this point the hunters are running through the brush trying to get to the hog and the dogs. Once the hunters start gaining control, they attempt flipping the hog and tying the hog up or dispatching it on site. This type of hunting isn’t for everyone and should be considered dangerous. Sometimes it will be a young 70 pound boar, a 200 pound sow with a bad attitude or a 450 pound boar hog that will take everybody to flip and tie.
Most of us enjoy a barbecue or ham sandwich from the grocery store. These fellows catch the hog alive, or put pork in the freezer the hard way.
