Bainbridge - Without an observant Pack family, there’s no telling how long Cynthia Grant may have laid injured in her crashed vehicle on Saturday night.

The SUV left the Highway 84 Bypass just south of the Dothan Road exit some time before 11 p.m. Billy Pack told us that as they drove the bypass he thought he saw an overturned car. They turned around to check and spotted the car.

Billy Pack and his son, Josh Key, a volunteer fireman in Norman Park, ran down the long hill to find the 44-year-old Grant in the overturned vehicle. They found her lying in the back seat area on the ceiling of the overturned vehicle and comforted her until Public Safety arrived.

Public Safety and their rescue truck arrived at the scene along with EMS. Assistant Fire Chief Marty Brown used the jaws of life to partially open the front door of the vehicle. That allowed the front seat to move forward giving them the space to slide Cynthia Grant out the back window of the vehicle.

Public Safety Officer Rusty Day stated the SUV left 12 feet of skid marks on the highway and then traveled about 350 feet down the hill.

It appeared the SUV struck a tree, spinning it and sending the vehicle into a roll where it crashed through several smaller trees and leveled a fence.

EMS transported the driver to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. Cynthia Grant, 44, of Colquitt, GA, was, however, charged with DUI and failure to wear a seat belt.

Cairo - A Grady County woman found a sizeable Christmas present, not under the tree, but inside a Cairo grocery store two days after the holiday.

It appears the shopper won $500,000 playing a Georgia lottery scratchoff game. According to Douglas Schilb, general manager of Cairo’s Piggly Wiggly store, his customer bought a $10 Jumbo Buck ticket Sunday afternoon and, although it hasn’t been verified as far as he knows, the ticket appeared valid.

“She came back to the store to ask us to look at it to see if it was correct,” Schilb says. “She was so excited!”

Schilb says the experience was uplifting. “The employees here didn’t win anything, but we were all just as excited for her. It was pretty neat.”

Dawson - Terrell County authorities are continuing their investigation into an armed robbery that occurred last week at a package store located just north of the Dawson City Limits, Terrell Sheriff John Bowens reported this week.

Sheriff Bowens said the armed robbery occurred at ABC Package Store located off State Route 520 and Augusta Street Wednesday night, December 23, shortly after 10:00 p.m.

According to Sheriff Bowens, an employee was locking the door to the establishment when he noticed a subject standing at the corner of the building. The employee said he began to walk toward the subject and the subject also started walking towards the employee, Sheriff Bowens reported. The employee said the subject placed a gun on his neck and demanded money, Sheriff Bowens said, adding that the employee then noticed the subject had on a ski mask.

After the subject found out the employee had no money, the subject went to the vehicle where the employee’s wife was sitting and took her purse which contained an undisclosed amount of cash, several credit cards and other miscellaneous items.

The purse was found the next day with everything still being in it except for the money.

Havana - Havana police recently stopped a vehicle whose driver had open warrants for escape, plus fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. Officer S. Pye observed Lynn Williams, 20, driving on US 27. Pye knew that Williams was wanted on two felony counts in Gadsden County, so he checked to make sure the warrants were still active, and initiated a traffic stop. Williams resisted arrest and began kicking at the officer and fell to the ground. He then started complaining, saying one of his lungs had collasped.

While awaiting EMS, Williams ran from the officers several blocks in a wooded area. After apprehending him, he was taken to a hospital and checked and later transferred to the Gadseden County Jail where he is charged with a number of charges.
