A Look Back

As the year 2010 begins, the news of 2009 is now history. To recap last year, here is summary of the articles found in the Miller County Liberal.

This final glimpse of 2009 will appear in four installments, covering three months in each segment. Here is the first quarter.

JANUARY

Joy Jinks and Karen Kimbrel received the "Golden Peanut Award," from F. Stone Workman, state director of USDA Rural Development, Friday, January 9, at the monthly chamber of commerce breakfast at Tarrer Inn.

President Barack Hussein Obama placed his left hand on the same Holy Bible that the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, used in his 1861 inauguration, and President Obama was sworn in by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts before one of the largest crowds ever to witness the historic event. Vice President Joe Biden was also sworn in.

President Obama is the first black man to take office at the White House, a milestone that few believed possible when Dr. King was assassinated four decades ago.

Each year the Colquitt- Miller County Chamber of Commerce banquets just keep getting better and more fun for all those who participate.

The 22nd annual banquet was held at the Miller County High School Cafeteria on Thursday, January 22, with a near full house.

Joe Cook received the Teacher of the Year Award from Principal Robert McIntosh.

FEBRUARY

Actress, volunteer worker and all-around good citizen, Joanna Richardson is SGA’s elective for the DAR Good Citizenship Award.

Dependability, patriotism, and leadership are the crucial qualities that the nominees must have to be eligible for this award. “Joanna has all those qualities of a good citizen,” stated school counselor, Mrs. Anngene Gibbs.

Bill Spooner is Brooke’s agricultural education instructor at Miller County High School. This year the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award celebrates its 62nd anniversary. Over these 62 years more than 162,000 high school seniors from across the country have received the award, which has become a symbol for excellence and the school’s highest agricultural honor. In 2008, over 2,050 students from high schools in 48 of the 50 states were recognized with the award.

As the winner of the 2009 award, Brooke’s name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed at Miller County High School.

MARCH

Mr. Robert McIntosh, principal of Miller County High School, commends Megan on achieving STAR Student and her choice of Joye Bailey as STAR Teacher. Mr. McIntosh stated, “Megan is an excellent academic representative of Miller County High School. Her leadership qualities are outstanding. It has been a pleasure to know Megan.

congratulate both Megan and Mrs. Bailey on their accomplishments.”

It was a nearly perfect day for having a good time. Kids, from infants to 95, were out in full force at the annual Charles Grant Kids’ Day Out right here in Colquitt. The cloud cover gave a cooling effect that made it just right to be out in Milford Street Park.

NFL New Orleans Saint defensive end star, Charles Grant of Colquitt made all this possible. “It is just one way of giving back to this community some of what this community and the people gave to me,” Grant stated.

– – – – Pageant was held Saturday night, March 14, at the Miller County Elementary School Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Twenty-eight young ladies were vying for the titles of Teeny Miss, Tiny Miss, Little Miss, Junior Miss, Young Miss, Teen Miss, and Miss Colquitt.
