Camilla -A Friday night house fire resulted in the death of a 41-yearold Camilla woman.
The Camilla Fire Department and the Camilla Police Department were both called to a residence at 5557 Claycove Road at 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered that the house was fully engulfed in flames.
A neighbor told police that he believed that the entire family was still in the house. However, all but one family member had left the home and gone to the store.
Firefighters burst into the burning home but were unsuccessful in their attempt to rescue the woman inside.
According to authorities, Gloria Westbrook was the only person still in the home when it caught on fire. She was asleep in the rear bedroom of the residence.
Camilla Police Investigator Robert Casterline said that they are assuming that Westbrook was the victim but are waiting for the dental records to be compared during the crime lab autopsy.
The electricity had been turned off in the house, and the family was trying to stay warm by using the fireplace.
Climax - Mayor Liz Phillips expressed appreciation during the Climax City Council meeting on November 19 for the large voter turnout for the November city elections and congratulated all candidates and those who were elected to office.
Phillips claimed that poll workers said there was a problem where several voters could not find who they wanted to vote for and did not ask for help.
For future elections, Phillips said anyone who could not find their candidate or the person they wanted to vote for should step out of the voting box and ask for help.
“We had some candidates that we are knowledgeable about that lost as much as 11 votes due to this,” Phillips said.
She said one person told her they couldn’t find who they wanted to vote for, so they just voted for someone. She said she knew there were a lot of questions concerning this.
