The 2009-2010 Beta Club has begun. This year’s officers are as follows: president, Macey Richardson; vice president, Jordan Parker; secretary, Shanice Grimsley; treasurer, Kaleb Whitaker; reporter, Hunter Cleveland; parliamentarian, DeiDra Beard; and executives in office, Madison Posey and Victoria Newberry. The club sponsors are Mrs. Christy Whitaker and Mrs. Jan Calhoun. Fifty-six members make up this year’s club roster, and 17 of those members are new to the organization.

The Beta Club has been super busy these past couple months with its fund-raisers. In October, the club sold popcorn at the Pirate Palooza and assisted the elementary teachers with the Fall Festival. Club members have also sent out cards for our fellow Beta member, Alan-Mikael, when he was injured with burns. Beta members also worked the Miller/Colquitt Recreation Football Pee-Wee league with concessions, announcing, and pulling field chains.

Like the month of October, the month of November was very full of activity for the members. The club associates sent out cards to America’s hard-working troops thanking them for their time and effort serving our country. Members also got together and had a very successful canned food drive to help assist the neighborhood food drives hosted by many of the local churches. Also, 15 Beta members who are attending the state convention in February were given due dates and were placed for the state’s areas of competition. The areas include Web page design, science, quiz bowl, math, social studies, spelling, and banner competition.

There will be another busy month in December. Beta members will be hitting everybody’s sweet tooth when the club cooks up some sweets benefitting the Chamber of Commerce for the bake sale that will take place in front of the IGA Saturday, December 12. Gifts for community services will be gathered for holiday delivery December 17, 2009.

Club members are excited about this year’s Beta Club, and I look forward to reporting to you at a later date.
