Pirates swat the Hornets

by Glenda Bailey, Sports Writer

It sure was great to see the Miller County Pirates back on track last Friday night over in Pelham, as they took on the Hornets. Pirate fans were beginning to think that our football team had been captured by a band of hostile "swabbies," belonging to Bluebeard on the way to Early County the week before. Pirate captains were Zenario Shuler, Dylan Spurlock, and Cosby Salters. The Hornets won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Salters were on the receiving end of the pig and picking up some yardage before being brought down by a stinging Hornet. The Pirates picked up seven first downs in the first quarter with good running ability by Cosby Salters, Shawndre Sheffield, and Zenario Shuler. The Black Death Defense led by Josh Broxton, Shaq Edwards, Jacquel Igles, T.T. Barber, Marcus Bullard, Juwan Jones, Dylan Spurlock, Josh Rhaymes, Jarrett Rhaymes, Janorris Mitchell, and Brian Lovering played a terrific game. Miller County Quarterback Caleb Cunningham's slingshot to Salters in the end zone put the Pirates on the scoreboard. Josh "Wild Thang" Broxton's point attempt was centered, and the Pirate fans went wild.

Wild Thang' puts another PAT through the uprights. Wild Thang' puts another PAT through the uprights. Just inside the second quarter, Miller County's Black Death came on strong again, shutting down the Hornets and causing a "boot away pig." First and 10 on the Pirates' 49 yard line, Cunningham handed off to Z-Man Shuler, picking up good yardage. Second and one, Cunningham slipped the ball to Shawndre Sheffield. Fans could see the determination and the drive of Sheffield as he picked up a first down plus. First and ten, Miller County had the ball at the Hornets' 32. Cunningham faked to Sheffield and slipped the pig to ZMan Shuler; Shuler then tip-toed through a nest of Hornets, sprinting 32 yards for a touchdown. Wild Thang Broxton's point attempt was on, moving the Pirates up 14-0.

Both the Miller County Marching Pirates and the Marching Pelham Hornets' half-time shows were great.

In the second half, once again the Black Death Defense held the Hornets from scoring, causing turnover on downs. It only took the offensive Pirates six drives down field to score. Cunningham handed off to Shuler for a hard run to the end zone. Shuler did not have the first sting as he crossed the goal line for a touchdown. Wild Thang Broxton was serious about his point attempts. The score stood 21-0 in Pirates' favor

The Hornets got a few first downs, but once again Miller County's "Black Death D" kept shutting the Hornets down. It was first and 10 for the Pirates from their own 14; Quarterback Cunningham magically slipped the ball to Sheffield. "Dre" Sheffield was running so fast that his upper body could not catch up with his feet picking up another first down plus some. Unfortunately flags popped out on our boys, so the down was repeated. Second and 10, the Hornets thought Cunningham was going to hand-off the pig but instead his pass completion to Marcus Bullard was awesome, and the touchdown was even totally bodacious! Hey-Wild Thang points attempt laid between the poles moving the Pirates up 28-0.

It was at this time that some junior varsity Pirates got some playing time. Pirate fans were amazed to watch our younger team as they played hard offensively and defensively. The young offense opened up a hole for Shawndre Sheffield to run about a 62 yard touchdown. Again Broxton's point attempt was on, and the score was at this point, 35-0.

The Hornets were driving hard down field against the young Pirates. With only 1:07 left in the fourth and final quarter, the Hornets scored, and their two point conversion run was in the end zone, giving the final score Pirates 35 and Hornets 8.

This Friday night, the Miller County Pirates will play host to the Lanier County Bulldogs at Pirate Stadium. It was scheduled to be played at Lanier County but has been changed to be played at Pirate Stadium. Game time will be at 8:00 p.m.
