Bainbridge - A Decatur County woman has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal wreck last Friday night, August 21.
The wreck happened at approximately 6 p.m. on Georgia 311 North, also known as East River Road, during a rainy period.
Merry April Turner, 25, of 421 Martin Road, Bainbridge, was traveling north on the highway when she lost control of her car and ran off the road's eastern shoulder. Turner then overcorrected her steering, and the car crossed back over the road and skidded into a ditch, where the car overturned onto its side and its roof struck a tree.
One of Turner's passengers, 41-year-old Carroll Todd Givens of Whigham died from injuries he received in the accident.
Following investigation of the accident, State Trooper Walt Landrum of the Georgia State Patrol arrested Turner. She was charged with driving under the influence (pending the results of a test of her blood alcohol level), vehicular homicide, having an open container of alcohol in the car and failure to maintain lane.
Cairo -Wade Harry, an inmate beaten while in custody at the Grady County Detention Center died Tuesday, after he was removed from life support systems in a Thomasville hospital.
The 48-year-old Cairo man sustained massive head injuries in the brutal beating, which happened Friday at 7:38 p.m., according to Grady County Sheriff Harry Young.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the tragic incident and Tuesday interviewed 22 other inmates housed in the jail pod the night of the fight. As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators had not determined why Ricky Reynolds, a 42-year-old from Quitman, allegedly knocked Wade Harry to the concrete floor, then repeatedly kicked him in the head.
Moments before the fight, another inmate in the open jail pod where both Reynolds and Harry were housed, pressed a buzzer to alert detention officers of a brewing problem. Sheriff Young says a detention officer arrived at the pod and saw the fight unfold, called for backup, and Reynolds was subdued.
Reynolds had been held in the detention center on felony burglary and criminal damages to property charges, along with parole violation since March 23.
Wade Harry had been in the jail for a misdemeanor probation violation three days when he was beaten.
Sheriff Young said District Attorney Joe Mullholland will determine what additional charges Reynolds will now face in the wake of Wade Harry's death.
Donalsonville - On Friday, August 21, a quantity of methamphetamine, also known as "ice," and marijuana were seized as a result from an investigation conducted by the Seminole County Sheriff's Department and agents of the Pataula Drug Task Force.
Agents received information that Henry Franklin "Frankie" Chambless would be transporting a large quantity of "ice" in Donalsonville. Task Force agents were assisted by the Donalsonville Police Department in a traffic stop on Chambless. As a result of the search of the vehicle, the agents located one half of an ounce of "ice" and one quarter of an ounce of marijuana with a street value of approximately $1600, digital scales, baggies, syringes, and a glass smoking device. Due to the experience and training of the agents, they were able to locate the evidence that was concealed in a container disguised as a drink can. Drug traffickers are known to use numerous methods for concealment, and they routinely try to conceal the odor of illegal drugs.
Chambless, a white male, lists an address of Cooktown Road, Colquitt, located in Decatur County. He was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and a misdemeanor for possession of marijuana. He was booked into the county jail where he remains.
