Miller County Schools to open when and if

by MCL staff writer

Newest water tank completed and filled. Newest water tank completed and filled. The Miller County Board of Education met with CGM, SRJ Architects, City of Colquitt, SOWEGA Engineering, Georgia Automatic Engineering and the State Fire Marshal's representative Friday, June 19, concerning when the teachers could start moving into the new school buildings on Phillipsburg Road.

CGM president, Carroll Middleton stated that the gist of the delays and time of completion stemmed from the problem of water provision. Middleton stated that the overhead sprinklers would have to be tested before the fire marshal could release the building for occupancy. Mr. Middleton stated Monday morning that all of the preliminary tests had been made, and those tests which looked good, will be submitted to the state for approval, which takes approximately three weeks.

Cory Thomas, city manager, explained that the water tower has been completed and the tank had been filled. Tests have been made, and the water pressure meets the criteria for what the school will need.

The test reports will now be in the hands of the office of the state fire marshal for approval in days.

According to Mr. Thomas, the school is not waiting on the city for water. He stated that the new well will be pumping before the school opens. The new tank is filled from the only well and pump in operation at this time. The new well will service this tank when completed.

Mr. Middleton stated that the newest flow tests all looked good. The construction of the school contracts and all punch lists have been completed. Occupancy for teachers and students must be approved by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

According to the 2009- 10 school calendar, the teachers will return on August 3-6, and students will return August 7.

"The new buildings look great, and other than the additional gym/classrooms that has been added, everything is ready for the move when the state approves the tests. I think that the people of Miller County will be proud of what they have in the new school buildings," Middleton stated.
