School building damaged

by MCL staff writer

Chalk and glue mess up school. Chalk and glue mess up school. It has been reported that at least 17 Miller County High School seniors chalked and glued school property Tuesday night, May 12.

The incident was handled by school personnel and was not turned over to police or other law enforcement agencies.

According to reports by officials, the students chalked the sidewalks in front of the building and outside walls and windows. One of the students obtained a key to the building, and they went inside the school building and super glued several of the classroom doors. Some of the desks were moved around, and posters were put in some areas. Plants were moved around the building. A piano was moved down several halls, and glitter was sprinkled around inside and outside of the school property. Some type of washable paint was administered to show and trophy cases inside the building and on some windows.

School policy as approved by the local board of education dictates that the principal is in charge of discipline. According to school officials, the principal had decided what the punishment would be and how it would be administered.

MCHS Principal Robert McIntosh stated, "Seventeen students did chalk on some of the outside sidewalk. Washable paint was put on some glasses and glass cases. Other than the glue on some locks, there was no physical damage to school property. There was some posters and glitter scattered around. I reported the incident to Superintendent Phillips, and a fair punishment was administered. I am bound by federal law not to divulge what was done to the students, or their names," Principal McIntosh stated.

They are a good bunch of kids that maked some bad choices that they will pay for," he stated.

When asked why the school principal's superiors would get involved, it was stated that when something similar happened with the previous principal, nothing was done. It was noted that no one was ever charged with a similar incident.

There is no official notice of what has been done about this incident, or what was done. There is lot of speculation and "they said" floating around, which are the biggest liars alive.

One board of education member stated, "Our job is to set policy. It is up to the superintendent and principals to administer those policies. When board members try to be something they are not, no one is in charge, and the students, teachers, administrators or anyone else knows what is expected of them. One of them wants to be a 'Boss Hog'."

Only the officials who administered the punishment and the students who received it know what has happened.
