Phillips' family reunion enjoyed by all

Phillips Family Reunion was held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the American Legion Home in Colquitt.

Family members gathered dressed in their "Irish Green" outfits in recognition of their Irish heritage, and the Legion Home was decorated with an Irish motif. Doors opened for visitation at 10:30 a.m., and registration began at 11:30 a.m. A covered dish luncheon followed. The Milton Phillips family furnished barbecue. Reunion President W.H. Phillips gave the invocation.

Following the luncheon, W. H. Phillips also welcomed family members and guests. Members attending for the first time were recognized. Don Phillips read the names of those who had passed away during the last year, and a silent prayer was given for the deceased family members while a candle was lit in their memory.

Special gifts were presented for the Oldest Female, Oldest Male, Most Irish Green Dressed Girl, Most Recently Married Couple, Longest Married Couple, Traveled Furthest, Most Children Present, Most Irish Green Dressed Adults, Most Irish Green Dressed Boy, and the Most Grandchildren Present.

Wayne Phillips presented the Phillips' Coat of Arms. Wayne Phillips presented the Phillips' Coat of Arms. A brief business meeting was held after lunch to elect new officers of the reunion. Those elected are Brinson Phillips, president; Jan Phillips Calhoun, vice president; Mary Newcomb, secretary; Sheila Phillips Freeman, treasurer; and Peggy King, historian. Mary Newcomb thanked W.H. Phillips for his two years of service as reunion president. Family members sang Happy Birthday to Hilda (Mrs. Wayne) Phillips and Milton Phillips.

Wayne Phillips presented the Phillips' Coat of Arms, engraved with the words "Ducit Amor Patriat" which is the Latin meaning for "The Love of My Country Leads me On." The original framed wood burning was created by Wayne Phillips specifically for the Phillips Family Reunion. It was graciously accepted by family members.

W.H. Phillips adjourned with the group joining hands to sing "Blest Be the tie That Binds." Next year's reunion will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010.
