Some five to seven people had assembled in downtown Funston last Saturday to witness what was to be the biggest event since Buster Staidmore's station started plugging tubeless tires instead of putting a hot patch on an inner tube.

But it was not to be.

The Siggsbee Kid was to take on The Summerlin Road Brawler in what some considered just more than bragging rights. The "fight" was to have taken place at high noon somewhere between Allen's Store and the Methodist church. Also it was agreed upon that the fight would not cross the street and interfere with folks going into the post office.

I really don't know how it started, but some said it might have begun simmering when The Siggsbee Kid somewhat casually mentioned that he and the other guy just might be a little kin.

Personally I don't know who took exception with what, but in some circles this can be an insult. We all understand that, I hope.

One barb turned into another, and then the insults began to fly. George-The Siggsbee Kid -Whitfield claimed he could take on the entire Summerlin Clan and only need one person to help him, this person being Jimmy Dykes. Dykes was to simply hold The Kid's hat and glasses and point him in the right direction.

Ben-The Summerlin Road Brawler- was quick to answer the challenge, the call, if you will. The Brawler reminded The Kid that there were many, many Summerlins. In fact, one person once said that the Summerlins and the nut grass would soon take this country.

"They's a remedy for the nut grass," said one on looker.

"And I got the remedy for The Summerlins," quirked The Kid.

As far as this reporter knows, the fight is still on. When, I don't know. The Brawler has been in training. It seems he has been lifting bags of cottonseed daily and at times has been seen hooking water trailers up to the pickup. "Well, I ain't been just setting around. I'm taking it seriously. The Kid has got some age and experience on me, but I have youth and strength."

The Kid's reply was "Simply put, here comes the pain, get ready for it."

As for as any other conditioning, both appear to be eating regularly from the training table at The Country Corner Restaurant in Funston.

There will be a photo op sometime. We just don't know when.

I would expect round two is coming regardless of the outcome of this.
