HOSA Club staying busy

By Reporter: Tabitha Grant

The MCHS HOSA organization has been very busy the last few weeks. National HOSA week was Nov. 3-7. The students and their advisor, Mrs. Georgia Ann Israel, had an activity planned for each day.

Monday, Nov. 3, the Vocational hall bulletin board was designed and decorated with information about many health care careers.

Tuesday, the HOSA members prepared individual informative brochures about their health career choices, including salaries, educational requirements, job opportunities for advancement, and geographical location of job opportunities.

Wednesday, the students spoke to the eighth grade classes about the many different career opportunities available to them in the medical field.

HOSA assisted Mrs. Amanda Nowell with the American Red Cross Blood Drive, which was held on Nov. 4, 2008. The goal was 29 units, but 38 units were actually donated. The students served snacks and observed the skills required of phlebotomists. The Red Cross personnel commended the students and participants on their positive behavior. This blood drive has been done twice per year for the past six years.

On Thursday, the students treated the high school and middle school teachers with a luncheon with all the trimmings. They really enjoyed the meal, especially the dessert.

On Nov. 18, MCHS HOSA, along with all other chapters in the US, was asked by National HOSA and National PTA to host a Flu Vaccine Clinic. This was held at the MCHS lunchroom. The purpose of the Flu Clinic was to make sure everyone is protected against the flu. This was one of our Community Service Learning Projects for this school year. It was very successful. Some people traveled from Bainbridge to get their vaccines.

Also, HOSA is accepting donations of food for the local food bank for Christmas. Any canned food items will be greatly appreciated.

After Christmas holidays, HOSA students will be competing in the first district competitive knowledge and skill events. This year students will be taking on-line tests on Jan. 12-16. These contests include, Veterinarian Assisting, Nursing Assisting, Nutrition, Medical Terminology, Pathophysiology, Medical Math, Biotechnology, and a few others. The top 10% of the region contestants will be chosen to advance to state.

Some contests will only be given at the state level, which will be held in Athens this spring. Good luck to all of the contestants.
