New law targets Internet use of sex offenders
Beginning Thursday, Georgia law will require sex offenders to reveal their Internet passwords, screen names and e-mail addresses. Georgia is one of a few states complying with guidelines in a 2006 federal law that requires states to track the Internet addresses of offenders; it is the first state to push this to requiring the 16,000 offenders to turn over passwords as well.
No one in Georgia has challenged the law yet, but critics say it threatens the privacy of sex offenders and burdens cash-strapped law enforcement officials.
