Sigma Kappa Delta at BC Keeps Busy Spring Semester Schedule
They capped off their season of four tours April 25-26 with an excursion to Atlanta's Fox Theatre to see Rent, the 1996 Tony Award-winning rock musical based on Puccini's opera La Boheme. The rock musical represents the counter-culture of the 1990s as Hair represents the culture of the 1960s. The BC group of 16 stayed in the same hotel where the cast stayed, which allowed students to talk with cast members and obtain photos and autographs. Most of the BC students participated in a guided tour of the historic Fox Theater before returning home. March 22 the SKD chapter, which initiated 12 members in February, went to Valdosta State University's Lab Theatre production of Arms and the Man. Ten viewed award-winning playwright George Bernard Shaw's comedy satirizing love and war. The group enjoyed the intimate staging of the 1894 play which placed some members of the audience in "touching" distance of performers, said Dr. Margaret Smith, SKD co-advisor with Dr. Marina Von Hirsch. March 15 SKD took 25 to Colquitt to see Swamp Gravy. Most had never seen this folk play from the southwest Georgia region, Dr. Smith said. SKD members had prepared for their Feb. 24 trip to see a Florida State University (FSU) production by having a Feb. 16 "Pizza Party with Shakespeare." They viewed the filmThe Taming of the Shrew in preparation for seeing The Tamer Tamed, a sequel to Shakespeare's play. Ten SKD members attended the Feb 24 excursion to FSU's Fallon Theatre. The play was written by John Fletcher, a contemporary of Shakespeare. "The performance was distinctive in terms of costuming and staging which made use of a turntable," Dr. Smith said. Among the SKD participants for the trips were new members. The BC chapter initiated 12 from southwest Georgia at their Feb. 23 event for which Dr. Suzi Bonifay of the Decatur County School System was guest speaker. The initiation took place in the Student Center on Main Campus. New members include Janet Brock, Erycka (Lacee) Brock, Ronald Fowler, Amanda Gossett and Jennifer Logue, all of Bainbridge; Blaire Dukes and Bridget Edison, both of Blakely; Brett Jones and Daniel Chastain, both of Cairo; Brendia (Crystal) King of Colquitt; Gabriel Broxton of Donalsonville and Billy Oram of Thomasville. |
