The Captain's Cup, located on the square in Colquitt, held its grand opening and ribbon-cutting Friday, April 11, 2008, at 11:00 a.m.
A large crowd was on hand to welcome the new owner and his family to Colquitt and to the square.
Even though the coffee shop is not new to the community, it now has a new owner and name. Scott Gordon and his family have recently purchased Bleu's Coffee Shop on the Square in Colquitt from Buddy and Tracy Johnson.
Debra Atkinson, chairman of the Colquitt/Miller County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, welcomed everyone to the event and told how excited she was to have the Gordon family part of Colquitt.
City Manager Cory Thomas also offered the city's support in the business and also wished them well in their new venture.
Speaking on behalf of the Miller County Commissioners, Chairman Barbie Womble told how excited she was to have the business here. She, too, also offered the county's assistance in any way.

Rev. Greg Beaty of Colquitt First Baptist Church said a prayer blessing the business and the Gordon family.
The grand opening of The Captain's Cup on Friday morning was a dream come true for the Gordon family, and they gave God the glory for the dream coming to fruition.
For years the Gordons investigated the possibilities of operating their own coffee shop, once Scott retired from the Coast Guard in 2004. Being patient, the Gordons waited for the right opportunity in the right community. Living and working in Colquitt was not in their plans at the time, but when Jane took a job with Primary Care of Southwest Georgia in Blakely new possibilities opened up. When they discovered that an existing coffee shop was available on the town square, they quickly contacted the owners and arranged to take over the shop.
As a home-schooling family, one of the Gordons' goals was to own and operate a small business that they could use to teach their children a variety of skills. Ashley, Andrew, Austin, Abigail and Allison have quickly learned how to brew finequality coffee and how to mix espresso drinks, smoothies and frappes. They especially like the ice cream service aspect of the shop. Other skills such as customer service, customer relations, health and sanitation, operating business machines and maintaining inventory have all developed quickly.
In addition to a variety of wonderful hot and cold drinks and ice cream, The Captain's Cup serves a tasty choice of light lunches Monday through Friday. All your choices take on a maritime flair with nautical names such as the "Anchor" "Helm" and "Main Mast." You'll finda variety of sandwiches, each with their own unique taste and don't forget to try the "Ensign," which is the Quiche of the Day and a true delight by BeeBee Richardson.
The crew of The Captain's Cup truly strives to please all of their customers, and they look forward to creating the right blend of drink flavors for you. In both hot and cold drinks, they will work to findyour sweet spot with just the right blend of syrups and sauces. If your drink is good enough, it might just be given its own name as a famous captain's drink. Hurry in and try them out.
