Miller County Basketball Highlights
by: Glenda Bailey

Pirates try for the ball.
On Tuesday, February 5, our neighbors from the South (Seminole County) came to visit Pirates' Gym. It was two hard losses for our Pirate teams, but they went four quarters.

In the girls' game the first quarter's score was tied 10-10. In the second quarter, Seminole was ahead going into half-time 28-21. In the second half, the Lady Pirates' mistakes were many and very costly as the Seminole Lady Indians defeated our girls 65-37. Christy Daniels was the top scorer for Miller County, and Zia Leonard was the top scorer for the Lady Indians.

The boys' game was different in a lot of ways. The Indians held the lead throughout the first half, but in the third quarter, our Pirates held a one point lead, and going into the fourth quarter the score ran neck-n-neck. The mistakes the Pirates made were within the last minute of the game which cost them the game. Top scorer for the Pirates was Victor Johnson with 13 points, and top scorer for the Indians was Kerry Chrispen with 14 points. Several Pirates hit three-pointers: Zenario Shuler (1), Will Marin (2), Victor Johnson (2), and Tony Grier (1), and for Seminole, Tavious Williams hit two three-pointers and Edward Moore hit one. The final score was Seminole, 51, to Miller, 47.

Then on February 8, which was Senior Night, our Lady Pirates and Pirates hosted their last regular game of the season against the Baker County Bears. Seniors Telisha Calloway and Shay Crankfield each scored 17 points, followed by Salina Diamond hitting 12 points, Christy Daniels with 11 points and Katrina Crankfield,10 points. Sukena Diamond assisted with 8 points, and Toya Bush tacked on five points. Top scorer for Baker County Lady Bears was Precious Miller with eight points. The final score was Miller County Lady Pirates, 80, to Baker County Lady Bears, 26.

The boys' game was exciting. As the Pirate fans watched two former Miller County students play for Baker County. Will Martin was the top scorer for the Pirates, hitting six three-pointers not to mention hitting all his free throws with total points adding up to 25. Senior Victor Johnson hit three three-pointers, Tony Grier (1), Cosby Salters (1), Zenario Shuler (2). There was a total of 13 three pointers hit by the Pirates. Top scorer for the Baker County Bears was Exavian Bodiford with 20 points. There were a total of 8 three pointers hit by the Bears. Renaldo Kelley hit three three pointers, Richard Houston (1) and Justin Wade (1). Reginald Woodard hit three three-pointers as well.

Coach Collins has worked hard with the Baker County Bears, and next year they will ready for the 2008-2009 Basketball Season. Hats off to Baker County and their teams!

The Miller County Lady Pirates will play in Seminole County at 5:30 Tuesday, February 12. The Miller County Pirates will play Wednesday at 4:00 in Seminole County against Clinch County.
