A look back at 2007

As the year 2008 begins, the news of 2007 is now history. To recap last year, here is summary of the articles found in the Miller County Liberal.

This final glimpse of 2007 will appear in four installments, covering three months in each segment.

APRIL

The City of Colquitt in conjunction with the Georgia Municipal Association recently sponsored an essay contest open to all sixth grade students with a theme of "If I Were Mayor." The students were challenged to write a 250 word essay outlining their platform if they were Mayor. All of the essays from the Miller County Middle School were submitted to GMA and will compete statewide for awards that will be announced at a later date.

In addition, the City of Colquitt always sponsors a local "Mayor for the Day" for the local winner of the competition. This year Alea Worsley wrote the winning essay for the sixth grade. She was treated to a day as "Mayor of Colquitt," complete with a police escort, swearing-in ceremony, tours of all of the city departments and a "Mayor's Lunch" at the Tarrer Inn. After a stressful day as mayor, she returned to her normal life as a sixth grader at Miller Co. Middle School.

Jim McNease, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie McNease of Colquitt and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Raines of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, has joined the United States Army where he will serve his country for the next six years.

After basic training, he spent the next fivemonths stationed in Fort Eustis, Virginia, for AIT training. He graduated from there on March 27, 2007.

Jim is employed as a AHG40 Apache helicopter mechanic, working as a crew chief.

He will leave Colquitt on Sunday, April 15, for South Korea where he will be stationed for the next year and a half.

The event kicked off Friday evening, April 13, at 6:00 p.m. with the opening ceremonies. Margaret Ann Daniels, president of the Miller County American Cancer Society, welcomed everyone to this year's annual event.

The amount of $50,682.87 which was raised, was much over the goal of $32,000.00. Because of your generous donations, the American Cancer Society will be one step closer to finding a cure for this dreaded disease of cancer.

Each of the committee members were recognized for their hard work and dedication.

It was one historic day for Colquitt and Colquitt First Baptist Church.

On Wednesday, April 18, the City of Colquitt and Colquitt First Baptist Church were visited by the University of Georgia's head football coach, Mark Richt.

Coach Richt gave a very inspiring personal testimony to the hundreds of students, coaches and all the others about his life as a football player first and all the plans that he had made for his life.

It was a great evening with Coach Richt.

MAY

Combining his passion for God with a candid and sincere vision, 7 Spin Music's new hip-hop artist Heath McNease will release his debut album, The Heath McNease Fanclub Meets Tonight, on April 24. With his approachable style and down-to-earth personality, McNease's debut album reflectsthe ebb and flowof his everyday life as an average Joe just trying to stay true to himself.

Dr. Turner W. Rentz Sr., a general practitioner who practiced in Colquitt from 1947 until he retired in 1989, was recognized by the Medical College of Georgia for outstanding contributions to the university.

Director Young stated that Dr. Rentz is appreciated at MCG almost as much as he is loved and respected in his home town.

Dr. Rentz was married to the late Freddie Kelly Rentz and is the father of four children, Wayne, Ronnie, Frieda and John. His son, Wayne, is also a doctor, and one of his granddaughters, Kelly, is in medical school now.

On Saturday, May 5, 2007, Thomas University held its 52nd commencement exercise. The event was held at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Thomasville at 11:00 a.m. One-hundred and seventy three students received diplomas at the annual commencement with

Wendi Griffin Donley of Colquitt among those receiving diplomas.

Miller County High School has always been known for its ability to hold a sports banquet that duly honors all the athletes and their parents and also pays tribute to the accomplishments of past athletes. This year's 2007 Sports Banquet was no exception as the inductee to the Hall of Fame was our own Coach Ronnie McNease.

United States Army Pvt. 1st Class Brandon Heath Bailey has just recently returned home from duty in Iraq.

Heath will be leaving again on June 8 from the Atlanta Airport for his second deployment to Iraq.

Pvt. 1st Class Bailey is proud to be a member of the First Battalion, Fifteenth Infantry and their motto is "Can Do." This infantry battalion will have been in existence for 223 years, or since June 3, 1784.

JUNE

At the conclusion of the first grade honors day program on May 17, 2007, Kim Widner and Angela King presented yearbook dedication in honor of Mr. Kent Richardson, principal at Miller County Elementary School.

Rebecca Allison Bell graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham on May 5, with a bachelor's degree of science in biology. Rebecca completed the four-year degree program in three years and graduated magna cum laude with a 3.71 GPA. She also worked while in school and is presently employed with Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.

Post 14 Donalsonville will become Post 14 Colquitt at the completion of a new building on Fourth Street in Colquitt. Projected construction time is 14 to 16 months.

The ground-breaking ceremony was a great success. Col. Bill Hitchens, Lt. Col. Don Chastain, and Major Davis Brack, all flewin to attend and help kick off the new construction.

Encouraging words were given by Cory Thomas, Councilman Jimmy Phillips, Commissioner Barbie Womble, Lt. Johnson and Col. Hitchens. The Troopers are very excited about this project and are looking forward to calling "GSP Colquitt" home.

The people of Colquitt are looking for the new post to be constructed and the Georgia State Patrol Post 13 to be apart of this area.
