Unexpected Places

by Rev. Mike Mounts

Throughout history, we find God in some very unusual and unexpected places. Tired, weary, and fearful, Jacob discovered God's presence in an unexpected place (Gen. 28:10-22). While tending his father-in-law's sheep, Moses found God in a most unusual place: a burning bush (Ex. 3). King Nebuchadnezzar found God in the midst of the fiery furnace protecting the three Hebrews (Dan. 3).

In Luke 2, of all places, we find God in a manger, a feed trough. Matthew reminds us of Isaiah's prophecy: "'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which is translated, God with us" (Matt. 1:23; Isa. 7:14). John writes, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" (Jhn. 1:14a). Think of it! God visited planet earth in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Approximately 33 years later, we find God in the most unexpected place: on the cross. Paul wrote, "That God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" (2 Cor. 5:19a). Because Jesus is perfect God and perfect Man, only He can be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. It took more than Bethlehem to atone for our sins. It took Calvary. At Bethlehem we see "God with us." But at Calvary, we see "God for us." But the grave could not hold Him! Jesus arose victoriously and triumphantly over sin, Satan, and death. Jesus is alive and alive forevermore!

There is one more unexpected place we find God: in the heart of man. God wants to make your heart His home. He wants to come into your life and take up residence. He wants you to trust Him as Savior and Lord.
Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinner, will you let Him in?
Room for Jesus, King of glory!
Hasten now, His word obey;
Swing your heart's door widely open,
Bid Him enter while you may.
