SGA Warriors lose heartbreaker to Sherwood Eagles
The SGA Warriors traveled to Albany to face the Sherwood Christian Academy Eagles in an important region game and the final regular season game of the year. SGA led for most of the ballgame but Sherwood came from behind in the 4th quarter to defeat the Warriors 21-20 in a hard fought football game.
SGA kicked off to Sherwood to start the game and held them without a first down forcing them to punt. The Warriors moved the ball down to the Sherwood 1-yard line. The Eagle defense held the Warriors on 4th and goal.
Sherwood got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown at the 7:25 mark of the 2nd quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
SGA answered back with Keaton Smith running it in from 6 yards out at the 3:21 mark of the 2nd quarter. Chandler Ray added the extra point to tie the game up at 7-7.
The Warriors took the lead at the 2:35 mark of the 2nd quarter. Taylor Tabb broke free for a 27 yard touchdown run and Ray added the extra point to put SGA up 14-7.
Sherwood was driving for a score just before halftime but Tabb intercepted an Eagle pass and the teams went into halftime with SGA up 14-7.
Sherwood tied the game up at 14-14 with a touchdown at the 6:21 mark of the 3rd quarter.
SGA answered the Eagles score with a touchdown to retake the lead at the 8:03 mark of the 4th quarter. Quarterback Miles Lee completed a screen pass to Smith who raced 33 yards for the score. Sherwood blocked the extra point and SGA led 20-14.
After completing a 62 yard pass play to get the ball down to the SGA 10- yard line, Sherwood scored the tying touchdown and kicked the go ahead extra point at the 5:35 mark of the 4th quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Tabb returned the ball all the way to the Sherwood 30-yard line but a questionable holding call brought the football all the way back to the SGA 25-yard line. The Warriors were not able to move the ball into field goal range on their final 2 possessions and fell to the Eagles, 21-20.
With the region loss, SGA falls to the #4 spot in the region and has to travel to Savannah to play an undefeated Memorial Day team Saturday in the first round of the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 2:00.
