Pirate crew gets ready to hit the line for another surge. Pirate crew gets ready to hit the line for another surge. On Halloween night anything can happen! The Miller County Pirates traveled up the road a little ways to face the Calhoun County Cougars of Edison. You might say, this is the toughest Calhoun has played in a long time.

Captains from the Pirates' bench were Jordan Kirkland, Chris Williams, and Jamichael Shepard. It did not take the Pirates long to move down field as Shawndre Sheffield and Trez Morgan picked up two first downs. Next, it's the third-first and ten from the Cougars 40, Morgan hands off to Sheffield. Sheffield looked like a miniature Clydesdale running hard toward the Cougars goal before being brought down by a mass of Cougars. On this next drive, Morgan attempted to pass the ball and in the chaos of some snarling Cougars at his heels, Morgan jiggled the ball, but held hold with the aid of some fancy footwork having to keep the pig home and broke for Calhoun's end zone to score. Chris Williams' point attempt was up the middle and the Pirates were on the board 7-0.

Calhoun County answered back quickly picking up four first downs and a quarterback keeper touchdown. The Cougars attempted a two point conversion but the Pirates' defensive shut them down. Score stood 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

As the second quarter got underway, Miller County was in control, but it did not take the Cougars but one interception to take the pig from the Pirates and move out in front with lead. Calhoun's two point conversion was good and the Cougars held the lead 14-7.

Miller County answered back with Shawndre Sheffield's zig-zag touchdown and the extra point being on target tying the game. (14-14) But that would not be enough for the Pirates. On Calhoun's possession, a ghostly fumble was the Pirates' treasure. Miller County's quarterback Trez Morgan connected with Cosby Salters for a touchdown, but Williams' boot failed to way side, but the Pirates were up 20-14.

The Black Death Defense came on hard and tough putting pressure on the Cougars causing a turnover on downs. It did not take the Pirates long to add more points with Shawndre Sheffield running a 60 yard touchdown. The Pirates pulled the wool over the Cougars' eyes on this extra point attempt. Russell Hart the holder pretended to set up the ball for Kicker Chris Williams, but instead Hart just stood up and tossed the pig over a den of Cougars to Cosby Salters for the two point conversion. The score stood 28-14.

The Cougars tried every way possible to move the ball down field, but Black Death Defense came on strong with Tony Grier stepping into the path of a Cougar pass. Miller County did not hesitate for one second, first and ten Morgan connected with Chris Williams for a touchdown. A flag was thrown against the Pirates for celebrating out on the field. Therefore the extra point had to be kicked from the 35 yard line. Williams made the extra point putting the Pirates up 35-14 going into half time.

The Miller County Marching Band was the only band to perform during half-time. As always, our band may be small but each and every one of our band members have Pirate Pride. The Cougar fans were bragging on the Pirate Marching Band on how great they really sounded.

The second half was nothing but a defensive game right up until the last couple of minutes, when our boys seemed to have gotten a little slack and Calhoun scored a touchdown. The point attempt was short but the Cougars were attempting to move in closer, but their dreams of frightening the Pirates only became a nightmare for the Cougars as the Pirates defeated Calhoun County 35- 20 and winning the Sub-Region Championship..

This Friday we will have to sail a good distance as our boys take on Clinch County with kick-off time beginning at 7:30 p.m.
