One utterly remarkable family

One utterly submitted by cangrow

Family of 17 kids — with names of all the children beginning with "J" — range in age from 19-yearold Joshua to Jennifer. In between are nine more boys and six girls: John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson and Johannah in front of their 7,000 sq. ft. home that they built. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, an Arkansas couple, just welcomed their 17th natural child and still aren't ready to declare their family complete. They both sell real estate for a living, although I doubt she sells much as she also homeschools all the kids! What a job. Notice how neat their house is kept. There are no maids or yard people. The folks on the "Today Show" said that when this family left, the green room (the place they go before they are on the show) was cleaner than it was when they came. This shows it can be done with organization, and I'm sure they have lots of that with a family that big. They also built their own home.

In all of the family photos, I didn't see a TV. There were computers used in the family business. No, they are not Catholic or Mormons. They are members of an evangelical Christian movement called Quiverful, which holds that children are a blessing from God and that husbands and wives should gladly accept all the children they are given.

Couples in the movement also believe that the husband is the head of the household and the wife is submissive to him, while the children are submissive to both. The girls wear long dresses or skirts and tops while the boys wear slacks and polo shirts.

When the Duggars were married in 1984 (she was 17 and he was 19), they didn't want children immediately, feeling they could not afford them. After four years, Michelle stopped taking birth control pills to have their first child, then went back on birth control after giving birth.

She just announced that she's expecting her 18th in January of 2009.
